Birth name of Mahatma Gandhi was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on 2 October 1869 and died on 30 January 1948. He is also called Bapu in India. His birthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti which is a national holiday, world-wide as the International Day of Nonviolence.
He was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Indians widely describe Gandhi as the father of the nation.
